What is Wuala?

Wuala is a new way of storing, sharing, and publishing files on the internet. Free, simple, and secure.

Wuala, your free online hard-disk

Wuala is a new way of storing, sharing, and publishing files on the internet. It’s a free desktop application for Windows and Mac that brings you a convenient and secure online storage. Unlike traditional online storage systems, Wuala is decentralized and can harness idle resources of participating computers to build a large, secure, and reliable online storage. This new technology has a number of advantages and it allows us to provide you a better service for free.

Access, share and publish files

You can use Wuala to upload a file and access it from anywhere else, even when your computer is offline. Or you can use it to share files such as photos, videos, music, or documents with friends or groups. Furthermore, you can publish files for the whole world to see. In the public area, you can search and browse for what others have published. You can store any file you want in any size you want. Downloads are fast and there are no traffic limits.

Start with 1 GB, get more if you need

You start with 1 GB provided by us. If you need more, you can simply trade some space on your hard disk for additional online storage. The idea behind Wuala is not to give you more storage in total (apart from the first GB provided by us), but to change the quality of your storage: It is able to transform local storage into online storage that can be accessed from anywhere and at any time, even when your computer is offline.

Security and privacy

Wuala is secure and protects your privacy: All files you store are encrypted such that only you and those authorized by you can access them. All encryption and decryption is performed locally and your password is never sent to us – so not even we can access your files.

Free, convenient desktop application

Wuala comes as a convenient desktop application for Windows and Mac. After a quick download, Wuala is ready. It is integrated into your operating system so that you can conveniently drag and drop files, upload files in the background, open files in your favorite application, and stream media files directly.

Sidenote: Is it us or does the Wuala logo look like it’s using Arabic letters? Meem alif meem hamza seen?

Our favorite Bay Area independent Muslim magazine, , will be holding their first annual Media Banquet and Fundraiser in early December. We hope you can attend and for those who are unable to, please for those who would like to attend but are financially unable to do so. Also, if you cannot attend, please consider to support their cause.

“It really is not a new phenomenon. Islamophobia has been present since the beginning of the ministry of our beloved Prophet Muhammad . The twisting of our image became, perhaps, an academic discipline of its own during the Crusades. It is the same today but has simply evolved. In fact, the very same arguments against Islam used centuries ago have been rehashed, albeit in a more sophisticated packaging, across airwaves and in nearly every headline. The time has come for a new grassroots media, one that represents Muslims in America. Such a media will seek to illuminate the consciousness of the masses and to dispel misperceptions among the common people, otherwise unknowing to our faith. Without your support and sponsorship, independent Islamic media cannot be established, let alone exist. This is your opportunity to either lift your voice or help to lift the voices within the new media network.”

From FriendFeed – About Us

“Our goal is to make content on the Web more useful and discoverable by taking advantage of your social connections. FriendFeed is a simple tool that scratches the surface of that goal by making it easier to keep track of the web pages, videos, music, and photos your friends and family interact with around the Internet.

With FriendFeed, you list the people you want to keep in touch with. They let us know what services they use (e.g., Flickr or Facebook or Picasa Web Albums), and you get a personalized feed of what they are up to. So, if your friend favorites a video on YouTube, you get a link and a thumbnail of the video in your feed. And if your friend likes a news story on Digg, you get a link in your feed. You don’t need to install anything to use FriendFeed — our crawling technology automatically picks up all the stuff you do on the web sites you already use with no additional effort on your part.”

Side note: For those who are using YouTube, IslamCrunch highly recommends for user-generated video media.

We would like to thank Scott, our Pownce friend for sending us the invite.

The steadfast team behind of have been working hard to expand their educational scope for young Muslims and young-at-heart Muslims. We communicated with Faisal Qazi and Adam Motiwala to ask them for some background information on Hikma Foundation and their upcoming programs throughout the remainder of 2007 and through 2008. We are honored that IslamCrunch was chosen as the platform to preview the upcoming events with Dr. Sherman Jackson, Dawood Wharnsby Ali, Dr. Ingrid Mattson, Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah, Dr. Muneer Fareed, Sidi Hakim Archuletta and many more, insha’Allah.

Background info: Hikma started in 2005 with the aim of educating young professional Muslims on the lost avenue of Islamic thought. Hikma’s vision is to provide individuals with the intellectual tools that will enhance their understanding of Islamic tradition in the context of contemporary and enduring issues. Our vision embodies much of Dr. Sherman Jackson’s pursuit of spreading Islamic Literacy to the Muslim Community. We have taken this concept and created our own vision that has been manifested in our 2007/2008 programs.

In our attempt to provide the Muslim Community with the tools needed to enhance their understanding of Islamic Thought, we featured when we sponsored his trip to Southern California for a 2-day Seerah intensive.  In the Summer of 2007 we had our summer discourse initiative that we plan to replicate this summer due to the communities response and need. We showcased local scholars such as Dr Aslam Abdallah of the Islamic Center of Las Vegas in discussing the enduring issue of Ethics: Trying to understand this concept from a Muslim perspective. We featured a local masters students research on Muslim Divorces in the West on our Divorce in Muslim the Community panel.

Currently, our Hikma team is preparing for our 2008 programs. More details of the programs will be listed on (which is currently being developed). A list of programs after the jump >>>
