A new web 2.0 search engine has been released that allows you to search the Arabic web using English text. follows the well-known Google model of having a mimimalist site: a simple search field and and a few links with Yamli’s other service. Actually, the search field (powered by Google) is not ’simple’. You type in a word and a list of Arabic equivalents is provided in a dropdown menu.

Yamli’s other service is their English to Arabic text editor. Send a message in Arabic and show off your command of broken Arabic language (choosing the correct word will need some knowledge of Arabic, so you could be sending a word that sounds like what you want to express but the letters could be wrong! And different letters changes the meaning). Correction: the allows you to convert transliterated words into the Arabic equivalent.

Here is what I typed out using the Yamli Editor:

Arabic Web 2.0

First person to guess what I wrote in English gets a special invite to next the Web 2.0, Social Network or Muslim organization that we receive invites from. Drop a comment to submit your guess.

The  forum is hosting a series of Ramadan diary entries. The idea behind the diaries is to encourage people to

“sign up for one day in the month of Ramadan to write a ‘journal entry’ type thing about their day, reflections and thoughts, their experiences…

This is an interesting means of exploring the diverse experience of Muslims during the sacred month of Ramadan. Imagine reading entries from around the world showcasing a day of purification and sacrifice… An important note from the moderator of the forum:

Again, like last year if everyone signs up and all the days are taken we can make the diaries public. Otherwise they will be in the Ramadan Tent Forum and only those who signed up can read other people’s diaries!

At the time of this posting, there are some slots available during the last 10 days of Ramadan. So, if you are an established or aspiring author, blogger or writer, use the link below to sign up.
