We function on autopilot and somehow have lost the ability to even sympathize.

One suggestion to add to this beautiful bit of advice is that we need to regain the ability to listen, to have compassionate listening. When we stop and truly listen to what is being delivered to us, in our daily exchanges, on the television, the internet, it should touch that original “fitra” state in us, one that is close to the source of peace. We must not allow for things to go in one ear and out the other because, ultimately what being is communicated is about all of us, humankind’s condition.

One of the scholars said that deep listening is the first in the order of knowledge acquisition. Knowledge in the wisdom traditions is in reality about light. “Knowledge is light.”

May God make us truly knowledgeable – beacons of light that guide us back to peace.
